Los Angeles, CA, Branding Guru and Design Editor
Robin Plaskoff Horton is a rare breed, a professional who can be just as at home—and successful—as a branding guru as she is the powerhouse editor and creative director of Urban Gardens. Her ability to spot cool is nothing less than a thing of beauty, the results comingling urban style, design and nature on the blog. A spectrum of influences has informed her point of view—from her birth in Tokyo to her kindergarten days in Puerto Rico and her growing up in Los Angeles to stints in Berkeley, Paris, Boston, New York, and Connecticut. Now that’s a fair bit of territory to manage so gracefully!
In her former life, Robin held court in the corporate world as a creative director and art director, first for a storied list of companies and then as the founder of her own boutique creative consulting firm. “Good design, like good writing, is about good thinking,” she remarks of her ability to create excellence in messaging. “It’s also about good business.” She certainly practices what she preaches as she searches for products and trends to feature on Urban Gardens, which she sees as a powerful lifestyle story told from the ground up. “It’s about the whole circle,” she explains: “from planting a seed to cultivating a garden; to harvesting, cooking, and then serving it in style with family and friends in outdoor rooms and indoor gardens.” The only thing we at Global Trends’ have to say is we hope there’s an invitation heading our way!
Urban Gardens was one of only five blogs nominated in the Lifestyle category for a Webby Award—hailed by The New York Times as the “Internet’s highest honor” (along with Epicurious and Mother Nature Network, no less). Mashable named Urban Gardens “One of Ten Must-Follow Home and Garden Twitter Accounts,” and Better Homes and Gardens magazine named the blog one of the top ten garden blogs for 2015.
Robin has a Bachelor of Arts in French from the University of California, Berkeley; a Bachelor of Fine Arts in design from The Cooper Union; and she also studied at The Sorbonne in Paris, a list that makes us exclaim it’s no wonder Urban Gardens, which she launched in 2009, is so intelligently crafted! To support this dynamo of a content platform, she organically built a combined following of over 232,000, making her a major influencer in the home and garden sector. When she dug into our product offerings and unearthed the Z1 Black Bamboo SCCW pendant by Ay Illuminate (in our Ethos Collection), we couldn’t help but notice how “on message” she is!
