Ghebo Large Pendant

The Ghebo Large Pendant

The canals of Venice inspired the Ghebo Large pendant, designed by Luca De Bona and Dario De Meo to pay homage to the city they love. The veining shape of the fixture was inspired by reflections of the sun on the city’s network of canals, which are called “barene” or “ghebi” in the Venetian dialect. The fixture is available in semi-gloss white metal and transparent glass, semi-gloss black metal and transparent glass, and glossy gold-plated metal and transparent glass. The Ghebo also comes in a small pendant and in a wall version.

Luca De Bona and Dario De Meo are two halves of a dynamic whole. The design duo has a number of Italian brand Karman Lighting’s most popular light fixtures in their portfolio, including the Domenica pendants and wall fixture, and the Nando family of fixtures, which Global Lighting distributes in the United States and Canada. The Nando offerings are a nod to Ferdinando Innocenti, who founded the machinery-works company Innocenti and was the creator of the Lambretta motor scooter—they pay homage to the celebrated Italian businessman who began his career as a blacksmith, and quite cleverly, we might add!

De Bona was educated as an architect at the Università di Venezia (IUAV) in Venice and De Meo studied industrial design at Politecnico di Milano Bovisa in Milan. Nanette Wong, covering Karman’s 2014 product releases for Design Milk—which include the Metra by De Bona and De Meo—points out that the magical attributes of the company’s introductions are highly entertaining and fantasy-filled. This is one of the aspects that attracted Global Lighting’s CEO Larry Lazin to the manufacturer’s lighting. Quite simply, Karman’s knack for drawing wizardry from avant-garde designers is unique—and this team is no exception.

After completing their educations and spending a fair amount of time experiencing the world through their work separately, De Bona and De Meo met in Milan. They immediately hit it off and began a collaboration that has resulted in some seriously savvy design products. Their expressiveness is made up of both the functional aspects of design and the great emotion they put into their work, melding tradition and innovation seamlessly. It’s no surprise their products have ample sophistication given they bring the disciplines of industrial design and architecture to the proverbial table. Global Lighting is thrilled to include their products within our Stratos Collection, and we hope to see more of the design/architecture team’s creative endeavors in our North American offerings in the future.
