Many a design student dreams of having their products introduced to the world in as stylish a way as Karman Lighting launched Giovanna Colapristi’s Mono pendant. The student at the Accademia di Belle Arti Cignaroli di Verona, or ABAVerona, credits her professor at the academy, Sotirios Papadopoulos, for making the magic happen, as he oversaw the prototyping of her light fixture and introduced the product to the Karman team. The rest, as they say, is design history!

Celebrating the moment, Colapristi wrote on her Facebook profile that she hopes this is the first of many of her dreams to become a reality. We at Global Lighting hope so, as well, and we are excited to include the pendant in our Stratos Collection. The visionary professor who got the ball rolling defines himself as architect, artist, designer and production designer.

The Greek-born educator obtained his degree in architecture at the Università di Venezia (IUAV) and also studied at the University of Southern California in Los Angeles after winning a scholarship to attend master classes in architecture and cinema, the latter offering him a spot in George Lucas’ CNTV, which is now the USC School of Cinematic Arts.

After completing projects in the United States in an array of fields that include design, architecture and production design, Papadopoulos has returned to Europe as an architect and industrial designer, and as a faculty member at ABAVerona where he teaches talented students like Colapristi. The designer/professor has also been involved in multidisciplinary projects in Milan, Paris and Athens.

"Design for me is a true art that opens us all to a new world in which to live, feel, relate, conceive, express, breathe and enjoy the true beauty of life," Papadopoulos says. Demonstrating there is poetry in the soul of the Mono, an Emily Dickinson verse serves as its muse: “Make me a picture of the sun—/ So I can hang it in my room—/ And make believe I’m getting warm/ When others call it ‘Day’!” Evidencing the fixture’s birth involves high style, the visual inspiration Colapristi presents is a kicky miniskirt with an edgy cage-crinoline dress overlay. How’s that for fashion-meets-design?
