Born in Michigan in 1942, Nancy Robbins hit the American design scene once her studies at the lauded Rhode Island School of Design, or RISD, as alum call it, came to an end. After designing interiors in Dallas and New York from 1964 to 1972, she packed up and moved with her husband, the painter Edward Everett Robbins, to Girona, Spain, bringing her creative prowess to bear on the Iberian Peninsula. She has completed various interior design projects in her adopted country since, which include the Arcada Restaurant in Girona and the Atlas Design Accessories Store in Barcelona. Private residences she has designed dot the country from Barcelona and Madrid to Girona, Celra and Saint Vincent de Montalt. She also designed the game room in the Casa Décor Show House in Barcelona in 2006.

Robbins has amassed a varied portfolio of products working in concert with Miguel Ballester and Gustavo Pérez under the umbrella of her eponymous Nancy Robbins Design Studio. Showing a particular affinity for seating, she has created chairs in materials as diverse as stainless steel, upholstery and wood. Many of the designs, particularly those for Chicago furniture manufacturer Andreu World, convey a slight Memphis feel. The company celebrates the long-standing relationship that continues to flourish: “She seems to have spent her whole life as part of the Barcelona design scene. Because of her stature and the quality of her work, it would have been impossible for her presence not to be felt. Nancy Robbins, born in Michigan, brought elegance to Spanish design.”

Accessories Robbins has designed include tabletop items and bathroom fittings. And a fruitful corporate branding project with fashion designer Manuel Pertegaz had her designing a logo, company identity materials, and products as diverse as jewelry and linens to tabletop items. She also developed the concept designs for the Pertegaz Boutique Hotel. Lighting designs include table lamps, floor lamps and pendants for manufacturers Metalarte, Taller Uno and Vapor. Robbins designed the Reflexion 50 and Reflexion 80 pendants included in the Global Lighting Stratos Collection. Design Milk and Core77 featured pieces from a jewelry project Robbins spearheaded in collaboration with other designers dubbed the NR Design Collection, important nods by the American press for the talented ex-pat.
