Furniture designer and interior architect Fredrik Mattson studied cabinetmaking before attending the University College of Arts, Crafts and Design (Konstfack) in Stockholm. He graduated in 2002 and has catapulted to the forefront of the design scene since. Mattson is one of those designers for whom his process remains the same regardless of the assignment or the materials—at the heart of his activities is always the excitement of turning challenges into opportunities. “It’s important to keep the original sketch alive and not to allow computer programs or imperfect technologies to govern the process,” he says. “When I look back at my products, the ones that appear to be the simplest and most obvious are the ones that proved to be the greatest challenges.
It’s often these products, too, that are closest to the original sketch.” Given that his mantra is “no shortcuts,” it’s no surprise he has garnered a long list of awards, including Wallpaper UK’s Design Award, Residence magazine’s “Lamp of the Year” award, the Forsnäsprize, and numerous EDIDA and Red Dot awards. His portfolio includes a number of lighting fixtures for Zero Lighting, including the PXL family of lights, the Bloom pendant, the RGB pendant and the Wood family of lights. The PXL Wall is a popular fixture in Global Lighting’s ECCO Collection, curated with architects in mind.
This fixture speaks to me because it is purposeful as a source of light to highlight something else, but it does not land on the wall screaming, “Look at me!” The organic simplicity of the vertical wood grain seems like a natural, because it is natural. We mostly see trees as vertical; when something is reminiscent of its natural form it becomes comfortable. Housing the fixture in oak veneer, either natural or black, allows the fixture an element of texture while remaining one with the wall. The Wood wall sconce is simplicity made beautiful.
