The Eliana Table Lamp

When sleek is as pared-down as possible, the result is nothing short of a modern phenomenon. Take B.lux’s Eliana table lamp, designed by Manel Ybargüengoitia, as an example. The ultra thin fixture, in steel and zamak, is a metallic marvel as it morphs between its two axes. The bulb is halogen, and the two positions it assumes are a slanting inverted L and a lower Z configuration.

Barcelona native Manel Ybargüengoitia has been designing popular products for B.Lux since the 1990s, including the Eliana collection, the Julia and Julieta fixtures, and the avant-garde Helios pendants. The design visionary, educated in the arts, architecture and interior design, is a member of the International Federation of Architects. With a degree in mechanical engineering and a Masters in industrial design, it’s no surprise he’s an award-winning industrial designer of lighting fixtures. Maintaining a vibrant presence on Spain’s design scene, he leads Elkarta Design and teaches interior design at the Elisava School in Barcelona.

His awards and honors are varied: included in the accolades are a FAD 88; an "Opinion 89" award for first prize by DIAC; nominations for several AEPD awards; and a number of nods to exhibit at the Museum of Decorative Arts in Barcelona (MACBA). He’s a popular lecturer throughout Spain and an organizing member of the ECIA jury. His products have been included in a variety of national and international publications, and the popular companies who manufacture products he’s designed include Grupo B.lux, whose fixtures Global Lighting brings to North America exclusively, and Hugo Boss.

Next Section: The Review

There are times when the lighting is about the aesthetics of the fixture itself, while other scenarios are strictly about the light, and others still are about the object that’s being illuminated. It is rare to find a fixture that can play all of those roles at once. The sleek and slim Eliana table lamp by B.lux is one of these winners, defining the design aesthetic of the tech-savvy generation. This fixture will look as interesting and appropriate in classic traditional surroundings as in a contemporary chic setting—in fact, the range of design possibilities is endless. Wherever it is used, the Eliana will serve as a non-competing fixture that won’t crowd a table surface. The halogen light is a bonus, providing the perfect crisp white reading light. Efficient and attractive is unusual to find in task lighting, and lighting as an art form in the same fixture is even more rare. This fixture can be used in two different ways, taking on the appearance of two different lamps: one if it is used as a design statement and another if it is used as a fixture blending into its backdrop. This fashion-forward lamp delivers all; and I would proudly use this lamp on any desk or library table, or next to a reading chair.
