Maybe not a sign of spring in this case but definitely a harbinger of style, the Bluebird is a single, balanced piece of lacquered mahogany that swivels on a metal stem and base of polished chrome. The light source is halogen and the feel is midcentury chic with a dash of elemental personality. The designer of the delightful Bluebird table lamp is Jorge Pensi.

Buenos Aires-born Jorge Pensi studied architecture in his home city, then moved to Barcelona and became a Spanish citizen in the mid-1970s, founding Berenguer, a design agency, with other professionals in the field. By1984, Pensi formed his own practice to specialize in designing furnishings and lighting, and quickly became known for his fluid chair designs. Within his lighting oeuvre, he has created a number of products for the Basque manufacturer B.lux, whose products we at Global Lighting distribute in North America.
Pensi’s cast-aluminum Toledo chair has garnered the designer a number of awards in Europe, including the First Award Selection from SIDI, Silver Delta Awards from the Assoziazione del Diesegno Industriale and a Design-Auswal 90 Award from the Stuttgart Design Center. In 1994, Pensi designed the exhibition Salon Internacionale de Diseno para el Habitat. His Orfilia chair for Thonet and Olympia lamp for B.lux have been synonymous with excellence in Spanish design since they came on the scene. Other B.lux contributions include the Bluebird and the Regina, which we are happy to make available in the U.S. and Canada. But we applaud all his timeless designs.
Jorge Pensi’s Bluebird table lamp for Spanish firm B.lux is a versatile table lamp that seamlessly combines artistic form and function, which makes it the perfect addition to a stylish home office. Its sleek angular lines are a nod to mid-century design and yet the whole is clearly contemporary.
The metal base provides firm grounding and perfect balance to the slender wood arm that terminates in a stylized “bird’s head” shade that reminds me of the tiny hoods delicately placed on a Falcon’s head in Falconry.
Bluebird comes in two finishes – mahogany with polished chrome metal which I would tend to use in more high style/luxe projects, while the raw metal and natural oak version is perfect for a more vintage/industrial look. It’s rare to find a lamp that fits so beautifully into either aesthetic without sacrificing an ounce of its personality, but Pensi’s Bluebird table lamp does, which can only mean this lamp is bound for the classics.
