Design Miami/ Basel Posts Record Attendance and Sales

The Sister to the Art Basel Fair Rocks Again!

Design Miami/ Basel 2012 has wrapped up on a high note and the show in Basel posts record attendance, starting strong out of the gate for its run in Switzerland June 11th through the 17th. Following through on an auspicious opening, the world-class design fair set record attendance and sales tallies over its week-long run.

DOTF 2012 award winners

The W Hotels DOTF Award trio: Foulsham, Kayser, and Malouin.

Among the participants were this year’s three recipients of the W HotelsDesigners of the Future (DOTF) Award, now in its third year: Markus Kayser, Tom Foulsham, and Philippe Malouin. They each presented new works springing from the directive “From Spark to Finish,” focusing on the creative process. We profiled German-born Kayser’s amazing photovoltaic  Solar Sinter Project very recently, which demonstrated the fascinating fusing of the desert’s sun and sand, transformed by rapid prototyping into objects in a 3D printer! His DOTF contribution is called “Lightzeit” and looks at harnessing the changing characteristics of natural light with technology. London-based Foulsham exhibited an exploration of various means of making invisible forces manifest through ingenious devices and contraptions, such as a see-saw powered by breathing.

Also London-based, but originally from Canada, Philippe Malouin shone with his “Daylight” series of glowing artificial windows. Their shapes derived from the ancient Chinese tangram puzzle, these louvered units are illuminated from behind with LED strips and their brightness can be adjusted in plantation shutter fashion. He was inspired when pondering solutions to the all-too-common dreariness of London apartment dwelling, and the appreciative fairgoers responded in kind as well.

Drawing from the summary press release, here are the words of Camron PR, the event’s publicist: “Exceptional historic, mid-century and contemporary design pieces attracted notable collectors and record sales this week. The seventh edition of Design Miami/ Basel saw strong attendance and sales throughout its seven-day run in Basel, Switzerland June 11-17, 2012. Forty of the world’s leading galleries presented both contemporary and historic design, which sold well among the 22,000 design collectors and enthusiasts who attended the fair. In addition, thousands of people were able to follow as the show unfolded on Design Log, Design Miami/ Basel’s newly revamped blog.

“Design Miami/ Basel 2012 was the most important show we have ever held in terms of quality of content and maturity,” says Marianne Goebl, director of Design Miami/. “The gallery presentations conveyed outstanding material in carefully curated installations, thus creating a true design experience.”

And don’t forget to mark your calendars for the fair’s return to its Miami milieu at the end of the year when Design Miami/ and Art Basel Miami Beach kick off. It will be running at and near the Miami Beach Convention center from December 5-9, 2012. You won’t be disappointed.
